Management And Self
Treatment Of Common Minor Illnesses
Many conditions will get better on
their own and can be treated successfully at home. These notes are for guidance
only. Any patient or relative who is concerned about a complaint because of its
severity, persistence or failure to improve with appropriate measures should,
of course, contact the surgery for further advice.
Looking After A
Child With A Temperature
Children can get a very high temperature
very quickly. This is the body's response to an infection. Most childhood infections
are caused by viruses and these do not respond to antibiotics. In order to make
your child feel more comfortable by bringing their temperature down, we recommend
the following:
1) Keep your child cool by taking off most clothing, not wrapping them in blankets
or sheets, using a cool fan if you have one.
2) Give paracetamol elixir ie Calpol, Disprol (not aspirin) or Nurofen liquid
at the recommended dose.
3) Sponge your child down from head to toe with lukewarm (not cold) water.
4) Give your child frequent small amounts of cool drinks.
