Update on measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

When practice doctors are away on business, locum doctors run their surgeries. We try to work with the same locums whenever possible to prevent too many new faces. The practice encourages fully qualified hospital doctors to join the practice for up to one year. This doctor has the title of GP Registrar.

Nurses

Three sisters run surgeries alongside the doctors - Sally Beedles, Anne Morris and Charissa Daniels. They offer advice on a variety of health problems, give injections, offer travel advice and immunisations, undertake cervical smears, dressings, ear syringing, blood pressure, health checks and teach breast awareness.

Community Midwives

A midwife from the team at the Royal Shrewsbury Maternity Hospital can be contacted on 01743 261000 ext 3868.
A clinic is run at the surgery every Tuesday afternoon. Phone reception to book an appointment.

Your antenatal care is usually shared with the midwife and your own doctor, sometimes with the involvement of the hospital.

Jackie is the link Health Visitor to the Practice and works closely with all members of the team.
Together with her colleagues, Jackie is available to offer advice and support concerning all children under the age of 5 years and can be found either in one of the many clinics around the community or by telephone: 01743 452300 9.00am – 5.00pm Monday – Thursday and 9.00am – 4.00pm Friday.

Counsellors

We have a counsellor in the surgery every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Libby Pugh or Silvia Hopkins will take referrals only from doctors at the surgery.

Attached Staff

Physiotherapy

Alan Leigh currently runs physiotherapy sessions every Wednesday and Friday. A referral from your GP is required. Initial assessments usually take 40 minutes and follow up appointments 20 minutes. This service is for musculo-skeletal problems only. Other problems requiring physiotherapy, eg stroke, will be referred to the hospital service.
