Changes to Prescription Ordering in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin
NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin (NHS STW) is phasing out the Prescription Ordering Direct (POD) service—a phone and email system used since 2016/17 by around 70% of local GP practices—to improve efficiency and reduce costs. The review found POD duplicates existing services offered by GP practices and the NHS App, has persistent access issues, and costs over £1 million annually.
To support patients during this transition, NHS STW is promoting the NHS App and alternative options like repeat dispensing or direct GP contact. They are also collaborating with community partners to help vulnerable patients and ensure no one is left behind.
A public engagement survey is open to gather patient feedback, which will shape how support is provided. A public information campaign will explain the changes, options available, and how to access help.
